The BIPM is a scientific and permanent organism created by the Metre Convention, an international treaty signed in Paris in 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations.

It operates under the authority of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) and the supervision of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).

The BIPM is located in Sèvres, close to Paris.

Its mission is to ensure the realisation and improvement of a unique, coherent, and world-wide recognised measurement system.

The Mutual Recognition Arrangement was signed in 1999 by representatives of 102 metrology institutes to respond to the need for fostering global commerce.

It establishes the criteria for the recognition of the equivalence of measurement, calibration, and testing certificates issued by the signatory institutes.

INRIM is part of
the European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET)

EURAMET is the Regional Metrology Organisation (RMO) of Europe. It coordinates the cooperation of European metrology institutes in research, traceability of measurements to the SI units, and international recognition of national measurement standards and related Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC).

It is responsible for the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) and for the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR).

The Italian Magnetism Association (AIMagn) aims to support, promote and enhance the Italian studies on magnetism, a rapidly growing sector in both basic and applied research, such as new technologies for biomedicine and magnetoelectronics.

AIMagn organises its national congress every two years.
Magnet 2009 was held in Rome and paved the way for the foundation of AIMagn, which was created in Turin in 2011.
Subsequently, the Magnet congresses were held in Naples (2013), in Bologna (2015) and in Assisi (2017).

Magnet 2019 will be held in Messina from January 30 to February 1.
