The Kick-off Meeting of the EMPIR Joint Research Project 18HLT05 QUIERO will be held at INRIM (corso Massimo d'Azeglio 42) from June 12 to June 13, 2019.

The Project

QUantitative Imaging Enables Reproducible Outcomes (QUIERO)

With more than 30 million scans per year in European countries, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most important tomographic tools adopted in clinical practice. Nevertheless, standard MRI has a qualitative nature (i.e. it displays a contrast between different tissues, which must be interpreted by visual inspection), which limits the comparability of its results. The project wants to foster the “quantitative revolution” in MRI, so that each image pixel is associated with the measurement (including uncertainty) of one or more tissue physical parameters, to allow following the course of a disease over time, limit the interobserver variability, pave the way to a new generation of biomarkers and reduce the need for invasive biopsies.

Among MR-based quantitative techniques, the project will focus on Electric Properties Tomography (EPT) and Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF), with the aim of evaluating their suitability to become diagnostic tools. This will be done through a characterization of such techniques, performed in a metrological perspective. Algorithms for EPT and MRF will be implemented and applied specifically to cerebral and cardiac scans. The performances of the algorithms (e.g. intrinsic accuracy, immunity to noisy inputs, …) and the uncertainty in the results will be first tested on a mathematical ground and through experiments on phantoms, to quantify their repeatability and reproducibility. Then, the application to data obtained in vivo will allow taking into account the physiological variability of the parameters from subject to subject, which could act as a misleading element in the diagnostic phase. The threshold for the correct detection of some selected pathologies will be investigated and the use of artificial intelligence to spot anomalies in the images will be explored.
