INRiM has been active for years in metrology as a service to meteorology and climatology. It provides innovative calibration methods – both in field and in laboratory -for temperature sensors and other environmental parameters. It cooperates with universities and research institutes for the characterization of instrument for environmental measurements with particular focus towards surface weather stations, radiosondes for high atmosphere, permafrost evolution, measurements in caves, mountain cryosphere, polar environment. Personnel from INRiM is committed to WMO in the definition of reference stations for environmental parameters (GRUAN, GSRN, GCW) and for the advancement of knowledge in temperature measurements in air, soil and components of cryosphere
