The activity is aimed at the development of measurement and microscopy techniques, methods of analysis, advanced computational modelling tools, and artificial intelligence algorithms, for applications in biomedicine, life sciences, and materials research. These goals are achieved by means of in vitroex vivoin phantom and in silico experiments.

In the field of precision medicine, measurement and imaging techniques are developed to characterize biomarkers of pathological states at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. In parallel, neural networks are designed for the automatic detection and segmentation of lesions in medical images. These instruments are used in synergy with in silico models for the generation of virtual clinical trials.

Particular attention is paid to the study of nanomaterials for theranostic applications (hyperthermia, drug delivery, imaging), biomaterials for regenerative medicine, tissues mimicking materials, and sensors for in vitro diagnostics.

Another area of research involves the quantification and investigation of biophysical effects of contaminants, by means of primary analytical techniques, advanced microscopy methods, digital twins and machine learning algorithms.
