The Italian Strategy for Quantum Technologies is now online. This document defines the national roadmap to strengthen the country’s role in a key area of research and innovation.
Adopted on July 9 by the Interministerial Committee for Digital Transition, the Strategy is built on four priority pillars:
- Scientific and industrial development in the five pillars of quantum technologies (computing, simulation, communication, sensing, basic science);
- Creation of an integrated national ecosystem, capable of generating value along the entire chain: research, technology transfer, industry, training;
- Internationalization and security, with active participation in EU programs and protection of critical technologies;
- Governance and measurability, through concrete tools to coordinate, evaluate, and update strategic actions.
The document is the result of a joint effort promoted by the Ministry of University and Research, with the collaboration of other ministries and national agencies, coordinated by Professor Tommaso Calarco. Among the experts involved is Davide Calonico, Scientific Director of INRiM, confirming the central role of metrology and the Institute in the future of quantum technologies.
The Strategy aims to strengthen basic and applied research, stimulate private investments, create public-private collaboration networks, and train new highly specialized skills.
This is a fundamental step within the broader Quantum Europe Strategy, which will lead to the forthcoming Quantum Act expected by the end of 2025.
