The activities of the Sector aim to improve knowledge and develop devices and techniques in the field of length and angle  metrology applied to nanometrology, surface analysis, industrial measurements, and space research.

The Sector participates to projects funded by EURAMET, European Space Agency (ESA), Italian Space Agency (ASI), European Union, Ministry of University and Research (MUR).

The Sector hosts internships, PhD research  in collaboration with by Universities.

The Sector is organized according to the following macro-projects/activities 

• Realization of the definition of the meter and dimensional metrology;
• Nanometrology and surface metrology;
• Coordinate and long-distance metrology;
• X/optical interferometry (COXI);
• Realization of the kilogram according to the new SI;
• Sensors for aerospace and space applications.
