INRiM announces two research startup grants titled “Development of a Laser Setup for Cooling Ytterbium Atoms and Programming of the Control System”.
The activity, which will last 6 months, will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Alessio Ciamei at the INRiM headquarters in Sesto Fiorentino (FI), Italy. The research will focus on the development of a laser setup for the cooling and trapping of ytterbium (Yb) atomic samples, as well as on the programming of the related experimental control system.

To be eligible for the grants, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Hold a Master’s Degree in Physics;
- Hold a degree obtained at a foreign university that has been officially recognized as “equivalent” by the competent Italian universities or by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

The candidate will be chosen by qualifications and exams.
The selected candidate will be responsible for the following activities:
- Development and validation of strategies for the pixel-wise uncertainty estimation of EPT techniques;
- Application of the uncertainty estimation strategies to reconstructions obtained from different input data acquisition protocols, in order to identify the optimal ones;
- Performance analysis of EPT techniques, carried out by applying them to numerical simulations of “virtual patients”, i.e., digital models in which various types of pathologies have been introduced.

The candidate will be chosen by qualifications and exams.
The selected candidate will collaborate, within the scope of the project ‘CSOC2 – Chip Scale Atomic Clock’, in the production and subsequent characterization of cells containing atomic vapors, which constitute the physical package of innovative micro- and nano-structured quantum devices. In addition, ad hoc optical spectroscopy setups will be developed for the characterization of the various atomic vapors.
