The EMN for Advanced Manufacturing was established in 2021 by approval of the Annual General Meeting of EURAMET. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed shortly after by 18 NMIs (National Metrology Institute) and DIs (Designated Institute) from 14 European countries or countries associated with EURAMET.

The goal and ambition of AdvanceManu is to provide high-level coordination of the European metrology community in advanced manufacturing to foster its impact in Europe and beyond.

This requires continuing dialogue with the stakeholders.

Area of interest

According to the definition provided by AdvanceManu, advanced manufacturing is the branch of manufacturing that exploits evolving or emerging knowledge, technologies, methods, and capabilities to make and/or provide new or substantially enhanced goods or services, or improve production efficiency or productivity, while ensuring environmental and societal sustainability.

To give order to such a vast area of interest, AdvanceManu identified 13 Key Industrial Sectors:

  1. Metrology equipment and service
  2. Machine tools and robotics
  3. Digitalised and integrated manufacturing systems
  4. Advanced materials and processing
  5. Energy generation, transmission and storage
  6. Nano- and micro-electronics
  7. Nano- and micro-technology
  8. Optics and photonics
  9. Land and sea-based mobility
  10. Aerospace
  11. Complex infrastructure and civil engineering
  12. Life science technology
  13. Defence and security

It identified 8 Cross–Section Topics too, with reference to the progress in the life cycle of products:

  1. Intelligent Product Design
  2. Advanced Materials
  3. Smart Manufacture & Assembly
  4. Quality Control & Testing
  5. Digitalisation & Vertical Integration of Metrology
  6. Legislation & Standardisation
  7. Health & Safety, Environment & Sustainability
  8. Knowledge-transfer & accessibility

INRiM in the network

AdvanceManu owes its birth and development to AdvManuNet (2020-06/2024-05), a dedicated EURAMET-funded project. INRiM was Work Package leader of WP1 Dialogue with stakeholders.

When AdvanceManu was established (2021), INRiM was given the vice-presidency with responsibility on Section 3 Manufactured components and systems. When the officials were renewed in the 2025 election, INRIM has kept the vice-presidency but with responsibility on Section 1 Advanced Materials. Serving as vice-presidents has given INRiM access to the Steering Committee and the responsibility of being in the front line in key and foundational decisions.

Among the INRiM’s contribution of records, the definition itself of Advanced Manufacturing and a synoptic table crossing the 13 Key Industrial Sectors with the 8 Cross-Cutting Topics, showing the urgency and severity grade of metrological need for each cross. The public can use this table also for providing feedback on the grading of specific crossing, which is indispensable to maintain the information up to date.
