The group deals with dimensional measurements at the micro and nanoscale, using traceable instrumentation. The main research topics concern:

  1. the development of new measurement procedures and uncertainty assessment;
  2. the development of new techniques for 3D topography analysis (e.g. stitching algorithms).

The activities concern:

  1. Metrology of functional surfaces: Metrology of functional surfaces deals with the quantitative correlation between geometric characteristics (finish, shape and size) and the performance of components whose functionality is highly dependent on the surface. Through the definition of unique descriptors, the metrology of functional surfaces simplify the characterisation of objects from various industries (e.g. energy and aerospace).

  2. Dimensional nanometrology: Nanometrology supports nanoscience in developing reference materials and defining quantitative measurements to consolidate product reliability and competitiveness. Activities focus on the study of samples proposed to support the need of 3D measurement at the nanoscale, specifically on bio-based nanostructures as natural reference of shape and size, and on measurements of critical dimensions of nanoparticles with complex geometry.
