A high percentage of component failures in wind turbines, fuel injection systems and roller bearings begin on the surface of the materials, due to surface irregularities that lead to deterioration, corrosion and fatigue failure. Accurate measurement of form and surface roughness is, therefore, a vital aspect of quality control.

The project aims to develop new cost-effective and traceable capabilities to measure form and surface roughness, with uncertainties of the order of 10 nm to 100 nm. One of the main objectives is to study the performance of displacement actuators to be used as portable generators for calibrating stylus instruments under static and dynamic conditions.

Improved calibration of form and surface texture will help manufacturers achieve traceable and reliable measurements, leading to tighter manufacturing tolerances.
